The client, Sylvia Liu, an author represented by Andrea Brown Literary Agency, commissioned a representative illustration for her science fiction manuscript. Being an author, she found it helpful to her audiences on social media to present a visual idea of her work in progress. She shared photos from a variety of sources to give me an idea the color palette and mood she was aiming for, clearly a dystopian future where junkyards are now overflowing with plastics instead of metal. In fact the hero of the story is a Chinese child who scrambles from the authorities while wearing mag gloves to detect valuable fragments of metal. Although Sylvia co-administrates the kidlit411 blog, this project was a new venture for her and more so for me as I moved from illustrating for young children to middle grade and young adult. This project allowed me to jump head first into science fiction imagery again but with a style geared towards young people.
